Have you made the decision to replace your existing water main pipe? It might be one of those things that seems like a lot of effort and trouble, but you will have decided that it really does need doing. This could be for a number of reasons, either to do with your water supply not being up to scratch, or because you’ve discovered you’ve got old lead pipework.
So the next question is, how are you going to go about getting the work done? You could opt to do the work yourself, if you think you’ve got the necessary skills and knowledge to go about it. Don’t forget about time: you’ll need plenty of it to do the work. Do you like digging? If you choose to replace your own water main there’s likely to be a lot of digging involved. This is okay if you like the idea of digging a large trench in your garden.
You’ll also need all the necessary kit, including plastic pipe, stop taps, ducting, sealing material, insulation and builders’ sand. Have you checked your local ground conditions for suitability for excavation, and what about the weather? You don’t want that trench you’ve dug to fill with rainwater.
Are you well aware of where any other connecting services run in relation to your water mains pipe? These include the gas and electricity supply. Put a spade through either of these and you’re in trouble. You’ll also need to be prepared to excavate from within your property in order to connect your replacement water main with your internal pipework.
Then when you’ve prepared everything you’ll have to wait for your work to be signed off by your local utility company.
